Animation Studios in Brighton Are Small on Purpose

The city's creative economy is built out of very small companies. A studio here with a strong reel is often four or five permanent people plus a rotating bench of freelancers, working for clients who are frequently nowhere near the south coast. That is not a weakness to be worked around, it is the product. You get the senior animator on your job rather than a junior supervised by someone you met at the pitch.

It does mean the failure modes are different from those of a large house. A boutique cannot absorb two projects overrunning at once, cannot easily replace a specialist mid job, and will sometimes say yes to a schedule it can only hit if everything else behaves. The questions below are designed to find that out before you commission rather than after.

The People You Meet Should Be the People Who Animate

Ask who will do the work, by name, and what else that person is booked on during your window. In a team this size the answer is knowable, and a studio that cannot give it is either overcommitted or planning to subcontract without saying so. Ask which stages happen in house and which go to freelancers, then ask whether those freelancers are regulars or whoever is free that fortnight.

None of this is hostile. It is the same question a producer would ask, and small studios that run well expect it. What you are testing is whether the reel represents a current team or a historic one, because in a market with this much churn a two year old showreel can describe people who have all moved on.

Capacity Collides, and You Want to Know When

The realistic risk with a boutique is not failure, it is a queue you cannot see. Two clients approving late in the same week turns into your animation slipping by ten days, and you find out at the point where you have the least room. Ask directly what else is in the studio's schedule around your delivery date and what its plan is if two jobs collide.

Then make your own behaviour part of the contract. Agree how long you have to return feedback at each stage and what happens if you miss it, because a studio holding a booked animator idle will recover that cost somewhere. Written response windows protect the small supplier and the schedule at the same time.

Motion Graphics and Character Work Are Two Different Hires

Local supply covers several crafts that rarely sit in the same room. Vector based motion design and typography, illustrated character animation, rendered three dimensional product imagery, and composited pieces that layer animated elements over filmed footage all use different software and different people. Plenty of the city's studios are excellent at one of them and polite about the others.

So name the craft in the brief rather than describing an outcome and letting each candidate guess. Mismatched quotes almost always come from that gap, and quotes built on different techniques cannot be compared no matter how neatly you line them up in a spreadsheet.

What a Brighton Brief Should Contain Before Anyone Prices It

Put the craft, the runtime, the number of shots, a style reference you actually like, the languages, the number of review rounds, your response windows, the delivery date and the intended usage in one document and send the identical document to everyone. Then read the questions that come back before you read the numbers.

A studio that asks who signs off internally, and how many people that means, has been caught by an approval chain before. A studio that quotes within an hour has not read the brief. In a small market that distinction is the most reliable signal you will get, because everyone's portfolio looks similar and everyone's day rate sits in the same band.

Contracts, Working Files and the Freelance Layer

Because the freelance layer is doing a real share of the animation, your rights depend on a chain you cannot see. Ask for written confirmation that every contributor assigned their work upward, and ask whether any element in the scene was licensed to the studio rather than to you. Then list what you expect to receive: editable project files, rigs and turnarounds, textures, render settings, fonts with their licences, and the audio stems.

Open that archive once while the team is still together and can answer questions about it. A folder you have never opened is an assumption. If the studio is very small, also ask where the files live and what happens to them if the company stops trading, which is an awkward question that any sensible supplier has already thought about.

When the Job Has Outgrown a Boutique

If your project needs three crafts at once, a long series, or a guaranteed weekly delivery for months, a local boutique may be the wrong shape regardless of how good the work is. That is worth admitting early rather than discovering in month two. Comparing the same brief against a deeper market such as the capital or a regional cluster like Bristol will tell you quickly whether you are paying for craft or for capacity.

Where the scope crosses into other disciplines, keep the pricing separate: software developers when a piece has to be driven by live data, campaign teams when the film is one asset among many, and search specialists if the point of the animation is to earn visibility rather than to be placed in media. Verified profiles and client feedback across the studio directory are on Edvido, and you can send a single scope to several studios and compare the replies against each other.
