A brand in the Emirates has to do several things at once. It must be approved by a licensing authority before it legally exists, read correctly in two scripts, appeal to an audience drawn from dozens of nationalities without becoming bland, and survive being reproduced on a shopfront, a delivery vehicle, an exhibition wall and a phone screen. This page lists branding agencies working in the country, with city pages underneath, and what follows is a buyer's guide to commissioning the work without discovering the constraints halfway through.
What branding agencies deliver beyond a logo
The mark is the smallest part of the engagement, and firms differ widely in what they include. Establish which of these sit inside the fee.
- Positioning. Who the business is for, what it claims, what it refuses to claim, and how that differs from the companies it is compared against locally.
- Naming and verbal identity. The name, the descriptor, the way the company speaks, and whether all of that works in Arabic as well as English.
- The visual system. Logotype in both scripts, colour, typography, photographic direction, illustration or pattern, layout rules and iconography.
- Applications. Signage, vehicle livery, uniforms, packaging, documents, presentation templates, social formats, stand design and the digital interface.
- Governance. Guidelines, asset library, and a practical process for whoever produces material after the agency leaves.
Applications drive cost far more than the mark does. A system delivered with a handful of examples looks complete in a presentation and leaves your team improvising for years, so count the applications in the proposal rather than admiring the concept boards. Where the requirement is really artwork production and collateral rather than a strategic rebuild, graphic design agencies do the same job for less. Where the brand mostly lives inside a product, the system has to be built with UX and UI design agencies or it will not survive contact with an interface.
Names, trade licences and trademarks
The order of operations here is different from most markets, and getting it wrong is expensive. A trade name has to be reserved and approved by the authority that issues your licence, whether that is a mainland economic department or a free zone registrar, and approval is not a formality. Names that carry religious references, that use initials in place of a full personal name, that imply an activity your licence does not cover, or that sit too close to an existing registration are refused. A free zone may also require the entity type to appear in the name.
Trademark registration is a separate process from the trade name, handled federally and granted per class of goods and services, which means a name cleared for your licence is not automatically protected in the categories you trade in. Check availability of the name, the classes, the domain and the social handles together, before any design work begins. An agency that presents three beautiful routes without running these checks has handed you a problem dressed as a choice, so put the availability search into the scope in writing and agree who pays for the legal filing.
One identity, two scripts
Bilingual identity is the technical heart of branding work in this region and the part most often outsourced quietly. An Arabic logotype is drawn, not typed and not translated. The letterforms connect, the vertical proportions differ from Latin, and a design that simply sets the company name in a stock Arabic face beside a custom Latin mark looks unbalanced to anyone who reads both. Ask directly who draws the Arabic, whether they are a specialist, and to see previous bilingual marks at small sizes.
Several practical rules follow. The lockup needs defined versions for both reading directions, with a stated rule for which script leads in which context. Arabic type families are licensed separately from Latin ones and the licence terms differ, so the guidelines must name the fonts and the licence must be held by your company rather than the agency's studio. Signage regulations expect Arabic to appear, which affects proportion and legibility on a fascia long before it affects anything else. And numerals, dates and mixed language sentences all need a documented treatment, because they appear in every invoice and every form your business issues.
How the work is priced
Most agencies quote in phases: discovery and positioning, identity design, application design, then guidelines and rollout support. Buy them as separate approvals rather than one undivided sum, so you can stop or change direction at a defined point. Naming is normally a distinct engagement because it consumes time in searches and clearances rather than in design hours.
Read the assumptions under any figure. How many creative routes are presented, how many revision rounds each phase includes, exactly which applications are drawn, whether rollout artwork for suppliers is included, and whether the agency manages the signage contractor or simply hands over drawings. Third party costs almost always sit outside the fee: typeface licences, trademark filings, photography, and the production itself. Ask for those to be estimated anyway so the total is visible. Quotes should be in dirhams with VAT shown as a separate line and staged payments tied to phase approvals rather than to dates.
Where projects go wrong in this market
The most common failure is aesthetic conformity. Whole categories here converge on the same gold gradient, the same skyline silhouette and the same falcon abstraction, which means the work photographs well and distinguishes nothing. The second failure is designing for one audience: an identity aimed only at expatriate professionals reads as foreign to Emirati customers, and an identity built purely on heritage cues can feel closed to everyone else. Decide deliberately which audiences the brand must hold, and ask the agency to show how the system flexes between them.
Two operational mistakes recur as well. Signage gets produced before approvals are confirmed, and the cost of remaking a fascia dwarfs the design fee. And the brand book arrives as a fixed document with no editable files, no font licences and no source artwork, so every future request returns to the agency. Neither is difficult to prevent if it is raised before the contract is signed.
Choosing among branding agencies
- Show us a bilingual identity you made, including how the Arabic mark was drawn and by whom.
- Which applications are included, and which will we have to commission separately?
- Who runs name availability and trademark class checks, and at which stage?
- Who works on this day to day, and are they the people presenting today?
- What exactly do we receive at handover, in which file formats, and who holds the font licences?
- Can we speak to a client whose identity you delivered more than a year ago?
Give every candidate the same brief on the same day, including your sector, your audiences, whether an existing name is being kept, the applications you need and your real deadline. Collecting the responses in one place through a single request for offers on Edvido makes the comparison honest, and it is worth reading the written replies before meeting anyone. Buyers who need frequent in person workshops often shortlist from the branding agencies in Dubai for that reason alone.
The handover checklist
Write this list into the contract rather than requesting it at the end. Editable source artwork for every mark in both scripts. Logo files in the formats your printers, signage contractors and developers actually use. Colour specified for screen, print, signage and fabric, since a colour that works on a website often fails on a vinyl wrap. Clear space and minimum size rules proven at the sizes you really use. Templates your team can edit without the original software where possible. Font licences registered to your company. A written assignment of ownership of the final identity and the right to modify it without further permission. And confirmation of what happens to the routes you did not select, since an unselected concept should not appear on another company's shopfront a year later.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a branding project take?
Identity design itself moves quickly once positioning is agreed. What extends the calendar is decision making on your side, name and trademark clearance, and application design for a business with many touchpoints. Approval structures with several stakeholders add more time than any creative stage.
Do we need an Arabic version of the logo?
If you trade with the public, deal with government entities or put a name on a building, treat it as necessary rather than optional. It is also far cheaper to design both marks together than to commission an Arabic version later and force it to fit.
Can we register the name ourselves?
The trade name reservation is straightforward and many companies handle it directly. Trademark filing across the right classes benefits from a specialist, and the agency is usually not that specialist. What the agency should do is check for conflicts before the design work starts.
Is a rebrand worth it if only the logo feels dated?
Often not. A refresh of typography, colour and layout rules can modernise everything a customer actually sees while keeping recognition and avoiding the cost of replacing signage and printed stock. Ask each candidate to price a refresh alongside a full rebuild and to explain which they recommend.
Who owns the work once the invoice is paid?
Whatever the agreement states, which is why it must state your company explicitly, including source files and the right to change the design. Assume nothing transfers automatically simply because you paid for it.
Should the agency also produce our marketing material?
Some do it well and it keeps the system consistent in the first year. Just price it separately so you can judge the retainer on its own merits rather than inheriting it as an unexamined extension of the project.
