Best 15+ Animation Studios in Hong Kong

Who buys animation in Hong Kong, and what they actually order

The client base here is unusually narrow and unusually demanding. Banks, insurers, asset managers, property developers, airlines, logistics groups and luxury retail account for most of the commissioned work. What they order follows from that: investor and results films, broadcast style title sequences and data graphics, product films for watches, jewellery and cosmetics, brand loops for retail screens, and campaign motion built around a seasonal retail calendar.

Very little of the local supply is narrative entertainment. If your project is a children's series or a long form original, you are shopping against the grain of this market and should say so early. If your project is a polished corporate or retail piece that has to survive legal review and look expensive on a wall of screens, this is a strong place to buy it.

The screen you are buying for defines the animation

More than in most cities, the display comes first. Work ends up on tram side panels, lift lobby loops, mall atrium walls, curved mesh facades, station concourse boards and anamorphic corner billboards, each with its own aspect ratio, pixel pitch, brightness ceiling and playback engine. A file that looks superb on a laptop can turn into mud on a low resolution outdoor mesh, and fine detail that survives a cinema screen disappears on a lift lobby panel seen for four seconds.

Get the technical specification from the media owner before briefing anyone. Give the studio the exact canvas, the loop length, whether audio will ever be audible, and the safe area. Then ask how the animation will be adapted for each placement and whether those adaptations are inside the quoted fee or billed as separate versions, because that single question moves budgets more than technique does.

Three language versions are the baseline, not an upsell

Most work here ships in traditional Chinese characters with a Cantonese voice, and frequently in English and in Mandarin as well. Treating this as post production dubbing produces the familiar broken result: text boxes sized for English, character spacing that looks wrong to a local reader, and lip flap that matches nothing.

Ask for the layout to be designed around the longest version, ask which language is the master for timing, and ask to see one finished frame in each language before production scales up. Voice talent is usually contracted per language and per usage term, so confirm whether the quoted fee covers broadcast, social and in store playback, or only one of them.

Cross border production is normal, so put it in writing

Plenty of studios in this city keep a small senior core and push frame production, clean up or rendering to partners across the border in the Greater Bay Area. That is a sensible cost structure and nothing to be nervous about, but it needs to be visible rather than discovered.

Ask directly which parts of the pipeline stay in house, who holds the client relationship if a partner is used, and where your source material will be stored and processed. If you are handing over unreleased product photography, financial figures or customer data, the location of the machines matters to your own compliance team. Get a named confidentiality clause covering subcontractors, not just the studio.

Regulated clients should schedule review as a production stage

If your business is licensed, the approval chain is longer than the production. Marketing material for financial products passes compliance, sometimes twice, and reviewers comment on wording, on risk statements and on whether a chart implies a promise. Animated charts are particularly exposed, because a number rising smoothly across the screen reads as a forecast even when the voice track is careful.

Build two compliance passes into the timeline, one on the animatic and one on the picture locked version, and make sure the studio quotes for the text changes that will come out of them. Teams that have worked with licensed clients will suggest this themselves; teams that have not will promise a single round of amendments and then invoice for the rest.

What should arrive alongside the finished file

Ask for the working project, the layered artwork, any character rigs, the audio stems and a version of the master with the text on a separate layer. That last item sounds trivial and saves a great deal later: it lets you produce a new language, a new price point or a new legal line without paying for a rebuild.

Ownership needs stating rather than assuming. Agree that rights pass on final payment, and check music and voice licences separately, since both are normally sold for a fixed term and a defined set of channels. Where a studio has bought stock elements or a third party plugin look, ask whether the licence follows the file to you or stays with the studio.

The seasonal calendar compresses the whole year

Retail and finance here run to a tight annual rhythm, and everyone commissions into the same peaks. The weeks before Lunar New Year, the mid year results season and the run up to the winter shopping period absorb the good freelancers first. Book senior directors and lead animators for those windows months ahead, or accept the team you get.

The reverse is also true and is worth exploiting. Commission in a quiet stretch and you will get more attention, more revision patience and better availability for the same money.

Turning proposals from Hong Kong animation studios into a fair comparison

Put every proposal onto one page with the same rows: finished duration, technique, how many versions and languages are included, how many review rounds, whether design and animatic sit inside the fee, delivery specifications per placement, and what transfers at the end. Quotes in this market look wildly different mainly because they draw the boundary in different places.

Give each studio the same written brief and the same reply deadline, and resist the temptation to explain the project better to the second one. When you want to look wider, the full directory of animation studios by city is the place to start, teams in nearby markets such as the studios listed in Singapore often bid on the same work, and a single request for proposals will put comparable replies in front of you. If part of the job is really interface motion or product demonstration, check what the software firms working here already have in their own pipelines first.
