Engineering Clients Define What Animation Means in Munich

The buyers who set the tone in this market are industrial. Vehicle and component manufacturers, machine builders, medical technology, aerospace suppliers, insurance and financial services, and a research sector that commissions visualisation to explain work that cannot be filmed. The result is a local craft that is precise, technically literate and usually more interested in being correct than in being charming.

That is worth knowing before you brief. If you want a loose illustrated story, say so clearly, because the default register here is exactness. If you want a mechanism explained so that an engineer will not wince, this is an unusually good place to buy, and the studios that do it well will ask you harder questions than a brand shop would.

CAD Data Is Not Ready to Animate

Projects that begin with existing design files behave differently from those that begin with a blank scene. Manufacturing models are heavy, contain internal geometry that will never be seen, and are organised for assembly rather than for rendering. Converting them properly means decimation, retopology, rebuilding materials, repairing normals and deciding what to remove, and it is real work with a real price.

Send a representative file to candidates before they quote and ask for data preparation as its own line item. A studio pricing a conversion it has never seen is guessing, and this stage is where technical animation budgets most often move. Settle who keeps the prepared assets afterwards, since they are reusable and you paid for them.

Confidentiality Is a Production Constraint, Not a Formality

Work here regularly involves unreleased products, internal processes and material covered by supplier agreements. Treat that as something that shapes the production rather than as a document to sign at the start. Ask where files will be stored, who has access, whether any stage goes to external contractors, where those contractors are, how long material is retained after delivery and what is deleted when the engagement ends.

Ask too how review copies are shared, because an unlisted link passed around by a client team is the most common leak in any project. Studios accustomed to industrial clients answer all of this without hesitation and often have stricter practice than the buyer does. A studio that treats the question as paperwork is telling you something.

Trade Fair Screens Are a Separate Deliverable

A great deal of animation commissioned in Munich exists to be shown at exhibitions, and stand screens are nothing like a browser window. Non standard canvas sizes, multi panel walls with their own pixel maps, high ambient light, no audio, and an audience walking past rather than sitting down. Content designed for a player and then stretched onto a stand reads as a blur.

Get the dimensions, the playback system and the accepted file formats from the stand builder before production starts, and have every version quoted inside the original job rather than added later. Book a playback test on the real hardware with time left to fix what you see, because a late change to canvas size is a re render, not a crop.

German and English Versions Diverge at the Storyboard

Almost everything here ships in at least two languages, and German runs considerably longer than English. A frame composed around a short English line will overflow, voice timing changes, and any animation cued to a word appearing has to be retimed. Handling that at the end is how a fortnight disappears.

Design for both at layout: text on separate layers, generous safe areas, timing that can flex, and captions treated as a design element since much of the audience watches in silence. Decide early which language is the master, because the master is the one the animation is actually timed to and the other will always feel slightly compromised if nobody chose deliberately.

Precision Needs a Named Technical Reviewer

The characteristic failure on this kind of work is not weak craft, it is an engineer seeing the final render and pointing out that the assembly sequence is wrong. Build technical review into the schedule as a named stage with a named person at animatic and again at first pass, and make sure that person has time booked rather than being asked as a favour.

Write down what counts as a revision inside a stage and what counts as reopening a stage that was signed off. Ask candidates how they price a correction that arrives after approval. An honest answer is a number and a date, and a supplier who promises unlimited flexibility is planning to renegotiate later.

Comparing Munich Proposals Without Guesswork

Ask every candidate to quote data preparation, storyboard and style frames, animation, rendering, sound and music licensing, versioning and the file handover as separate lines, and send them an identical brief. Then read the questions that come back, because a studio that asks who signs off technically has run an industrial project before.

Put the working files in the contract next to the delivery date: editable projects, prepared assets, rigs, render settings, fonts with their licences and audio stems, with written confirmation that every contractor assigned their rights upward. Where the job crosses disciplines, price software developers, app teams and communications advisers separately. If a specific craft is thin locally, running the same brief past Berlin or Vienna is a cheap calibration. Verified profiles and client feedback are in the studio directory, and a single shared scope gets you replies that can be compared.
