Best 15+ SEO Agencies in Amsterdam

A large share of the companies that go shopping for SEO help here run a website that was never designed to rank in the local language. The product is English, the investors are foreign, the content system was chosen by an engineering team, and somewhere along the way a sales lead asked why the company is invisible when a buyer types a Dutch phrase into a search box. That gap is the actual brief, and it is worth naming out loud before anyone sends a proposal.

Why SEO briefs in Amsterdam usually arrive as a language problem

Two audiences sit on top of each other in this market. One searches in English, is comfortable buying from an international site, and behaves roughly like the rest of your export pipeline. The other searches in Dutch, uses shorter and blunter phrasing, and will keep scrolling until something reads like it was written by a person who lives here. An English-only site can serve the first audience well and lose the second entirely, and for most categories the second audience is the one with a shorter path to a signed contract.

The question a good SEO partner will push back on is not how to translate. It is whether the local layer earns its keep. Building it means committing to a keyword set someone has to research natively, a page structure someone has to maintain, and an editor who can keep the copy alive after the launch enthusiasm fades. Companies routinely commission the first two and forget the third, which is how a site ends up with a folder of pages nobody has touched since the quarter they were published.

If you build a Dutch layer, the structure decision comes first

Where the local pages live matters more than most proposals admit, because the decision is expensive to reverse. A language folder on the existing domain inherits whatever authority the site already has and is the default that works for the majority of businesses. A separate country domain reads as unmistakably local and can be the right call when the local entity is genuinely a different business with its own catalogue, but it starts from nothing and needs its own links, its own coverage and its own patience. A subdomain usually manages to combine the drawbacks of both.

Whatever is chosen, the language annotations between versions have to be correct and reciprocal, and they have to point at pages that exist. Broken or one-directional annotations are the single most common technical SEO fault on bilingual sites in this market, and they produce a specific symptom: the English page shows up for Dutch queries, converts badly, and everyone blames the copy. Ask any candidate to show you how they would verify that setup rather than describe it, because describing it is easy.

Amsterdam SEO supply is technical, senior and expensive by the hour

The local supplier pool skews towards small, senior teams. Many were built by people who came out of product companies, which means they are strong at crawl diagnostics, site architecture, structured data and working alongside engineers, and weaker at producing volume. That is a good match for a scale-up whose site is complex and whose content is thin only in the local language. It is a poor match for a business that needs forty pages written and has nobody internally to write them.

Hourly rates are high, which changes what you should buy. Paying senior rates for content production is a waste; paying them for diagnosis, architecture and the specification work that unblocks your own team is not. Several of the best arrangements in this market look like a small standing advisory engagement plus a separate, cheaper production channel, rather than one retainer that pretends to cover both.

Questions that separate one proposal from the next

Most SEO decks in Amsterdam contain the same five slides. These questions produce answers that differ, which is the only reason to ask anything.

• Who on your team is a native speaker of the language my customers search in, and will that person write or only review?
• How many hours of my developers do you expect to need each month, and what is your plan when they are unavailable?
• Describe your link acquisition method concretely. An answer built on editorial outreach and partnerships is workable; an answer that will not name a method is a placement network, and that becomes a permanent liability on your domain.
• What do you produce in the first month that I could put in front of a board, and what does month six look like if the work goes well?
• Tell me about an engagement that did not deliver and what you concluded from it.

Send the same set to every candidate and compare written answers rather than presentations. If you would rather collect comparable replies without running the process yourself, you can put the brief in once and let several SEO teams respond to it, then use those replies as your scoring sheet.

Agreeing what counts as progress before the work starts

SEO results move slowly enough that a vague success definition will quietly survive an entire contract. Fix three things in writing at the start. First, the query set that matters, split between branded and non-branded, because branded growth will flatter any report. Second, the outcome you actually sell, whether that is a demo request, a trial, a quote form or a transaction, measured from organic sessions. Third, a shipping log: what was changed, when, and what moved afterwards. An SEO agency that can connect a specific change to a specific result is practising a discipline. One that presents movement without attribution is describing the weather.

Be realistic about the calendar too. Technical corrections can register within weeks. Content and authority work rarely reads clearly before the second reporting quarter, which is why a short trial contract tests the working relationship rather than the strategy.

Where the rest of the marketing stack sits

SEO rarely arrives alone, and keeping the neighbouring purchases separate protects the budget line. Paid and lifecycle work follows its own logic and belongs with the broader marketing teams operating in this city. Earned coverage, which is also where a surprising share of durable links come from, is the business of communications specialists working with local and international press. If the honest blocker is that nobody can change the site quickly, the first conversation belongs with the engineering partners who maintain sites and platforms here rather than with an SEO consultant. For how this category behaves in a nearby market with a similar bilingual pattern, the list of search specialists in the Belgian capital is a useful comparison, and the wider view sits on the overview of SEO agencies.
