Best 15+ SEO Agencies in Cardiff

A Cardiff SEO brief starts with a question about language

Very few local SEO markets force a decision about bilingualism before anyone opens a keyword tool. This one does. Wales operates statutory Welsh language duties that apply to public bodies and to a growing number of organisations that contract with them, and even where the duties do not bite, a visibly bilingual presence carries weight with a domestic audience.

The decision matters technically, not just editorially, and it shapes every SEO choice that follows. A bilingual site can be built as parallel directories with reciprocal language annotations, as a single set of pages with switchable labels, or as two separate properties. Each option produces a different crawl footprint, a different risk of the two versions competing with each other, and a different ongoing cost. Whoever you hire should be able to explain which they recommend and why, in terms of your organisation rather than in general.

Put it in the brief. An agency that finds out in month two that half the content needs a second version will reprice, and you will have lost a quarter.

What bilingual delivery actually costs and returns

Be realistic about the traffic case. Search volume in Welsh is small next to search volume in English, so the argument for the second version is compliance, trust and the quality of the user experience rather than incremental organic sessions. If an SEO supplier pitches Welsh pages as a traffic play, they have not looked at the data.

The practical questions are who translates, whether translation is reviewed by a second reader, how the two versions stay in step when the English side changes, and what happens to a page that exists in one language only. Ask for the workflow in writing. The most common failure is not a bad translation, it is drift: an English page is updated five times over a year and its counterpart is never touched, which leaves you publicly out of date in the language you added to demonstrate care.

Buying through a framework, a tender or a grant

A capital city concentrates public bodies, health organisations, universities, broadcasters and a large third sector, and a lot of the marketing spend around them moves through formal procurement. If that is your situation, the shortlist is shaped as much by process as by capability.

Check early whether your organisation must run a competitive exercise, whether an existing framework already lists suitable suppliers, and what evidence the agency will need to provide: insurance levels, data handling, social value commitments, subcontractor disclosure. Ask agencies directly whether they have delivered under those conditions before, because a small independent that has never written a tender response may be excellent at the work and still be unable to win the contract.

If you are on the other side of that fence and sell to public bodies yourself, say so. Long procurement cycles change what SEO is for: the job becomes being findable and credible during a months-long evaluation rather than capturing an immediate enquiry.

Awards, badges and how to check a claim

Search demand in this market is full of phrases built around superlatives and awards, which tells you what buyers are trying to do: they are looking for a proxy for quality because they cannot evaluate the work directly. The proxies are weak, and they are weakest in SEO because nothing about the work is visible from outside. Many industry awards are paid entry, many badges are self-issued, and a certification from a platform usually means somebody passed a free exam.

Replace the proxy with two checks that cost you an hour. First, ask for two references in your sector and actually call them, with one specific question: what did the agency get wrong, and how did they handle it. Second, ask each shortlisted team for a short written opinion on your own site before you sign anything. Give them read-only access for a week and ask what they would fix first and what they would leave alone. A team that can describe your problem in your language is worth more than a wall of logos.

Capital city, national catchment

Many organisations based here do not sell to the city. They sell nationally, or to a region that spreads well beyond the urban edge into the valleys and the coast. That changes the page architecture: a single city-named page will not carry demand from towns an hour away, and a page for every town will collapse into near-duplicates unless each one has genuinely different content.

Ask a prospective SEO agency how they decide which locations deserve a page. The right answer involves evidence: real search demand, a real service presence, something specific to say. The wrong answer is a spreadsheet of place names merged into a template, which is easy to spot afterwards and expensive to unwind.

Pricing, term and the assets that stay in your name

Expect three shapes of quote: a fixed price for a defined piece of work, a monthly retainer, or advisory days. The fee matters less than what the contract says about leaving. Check the notice period, whether the term renews automatically, and what is handed over in the final month.

Handover in SEO means access. Your organisation should own the domain and DNS, the content management system administrator account, the analytics property and the search console properties, with agency staff added as users. Content produced for you, including both language versions, should be yours on payment with source files, not licensed back. Any language annotations, redirect rules or templates built into your site are part of the estate you keep.

Getting comparable proposals from Cardiff agencies

Write the brief once. State whether bilingual delivery is required or optional, name your platform, describe the catchment you genuinely serve, define what a result looks like in enquiries rather than rankings, and give a budget band. Send the same document to everyone and ask for replies in the same order so that you are comparing substance rather than design.

Consider too whether search belongs with the same supplier as everything else. Teams in this market frequently pair it with web design, public relations or software development, and a single accountable supplier is easier to manage when a site change and a content plan depend on each other. If you want a reference point for pricing, quotes from SEO agencies in Bristol or Birmingham will show you whether your range is typical, and the wider SEO agency directory lists the category in every other market.

With the brief finished, send it once through our offer request and let the shortlisted teams answer in a format you can read side by side.
