Best 15+ Social Media Agencies in Bath

Small markets change how you buy social media. In a large city you filter a long list down; here you are working with a handful of credible firms, a wider pool of independent freelancers, and the option of hiring from further afield. The risk is not that you pick badly. The risk is that you compare three quotes, find them close enough, and never establish what any of them would actually produce.

A short list in Bath is a reason to widen the brief, not narrow it

Because the local pool is small, the firms in it tend to be generalists who do social media alongside websites, print and events. That can work well, and it is often the honest answer for a business that needs one partner rather than four. But it means the depth of the social media practice varies enormously between shops that look similar from the outside.

Ask each one what proportion of their revenue comes from this kind of work and how many accounts they currently run. A firm where yours would be the third such client is buying experience on your budget, which is acceptable if the price reflects it and unacceptable if it does not. It is also worth quoting for the same brief with a specialist from the larger agency market half an hour up the road, purely as a benchmark, even if you fully intend to hire locally.

Social media strategy and social media production are different purchases

The single most useful thing you can do before requesting quotes is decide which of two problems you have. Either you do not know what to say, or you know what to say and cannot make enough of it. The first is a strategy purchase and it is short, intense and finite. The second is a production purchase and it is a steady monthly commitment.

Firms will happily sell you both bundled together, and the bundle is where comparability dies. Ask for them priced separately even if you buy them together. A strategy engagement should end with something you could hand to a different supplier: an audience definition, a small number of content pillars, a channel decision with reasons, and a measurement plan. If the deliverable is a slide deck that restates your own brief back to you, you have paid for a meeting.

Ask how much gets made in a month, not how much gets posted

Posting frequency is the wrong unit for judging a social media proposal. A calendar with daily activity can be built almost entirely from resized stock and recycled quotes, and it will look busy while achieving nothing. What matters is original material: shoot days, edited video, written pieces, photographs of your actual premises and people.

So ask for the monthly fee to be broken into original production, adaptation of existing assets, community management and reporting. Ask how many hours of filming the fee assumes and who owns the footage afterwards. Ask what happens in a month when you have no news. A good social media partner has an answer to that question that does not involve national awareness days. A weak one will fill the gap and invoice you for it.

In a small firm you are buying specific people

The pitch team and the delivery team are the same people in an agency of this size, which is a genuine advantage and a concentrated risk. One person leaving can change the quality of your account overnight, and holiday season is a real constraint rather than an abstraction.

Ask who covers the account when the lead is away, how many clients that person carries, and what is written down. Ask to see the tone of voice guide and the content calendar template they would use, with another client's details removed. Ask what happens to your social media coverage if the business doubles in size next year. Independent firms are usually candid about the ceiling of what they can carry, and a straight answer there is worth more than a polished credentials deck.

Local relevance is about audience, not postcode

Being nearby matters when the work depends on being in the room: filming in your workshop, covering an event, photographing a seasonal menu. It matters much less when your customers are spread across the country and the work is paid distribution and copy.

Be honest about which you are, because it changes the shortlist. A visitor economy business, a hospitality venue or a place led attraction genuinely benefits from a team that can walk over with a camera on a quiet Tuesday. A software company selling nationally does not, and should weight sector understanding far above travel time. Say which of the two you are in the brief and let the responses sort themselves.

The contract clauses that cost people money

Three things reliably cause trouble. The first is account ownership: pages, ad accounts, scheduling tools and creator agreements should be in your name, with administrative access granted to the agency rather than the other way round. The second is notice period, which in small firms is often three months and is frequently the largest hidden cost of a bad fit. The third is asset licensing, specifically whether you can use commissioned photography and video outside social media, in print or in advertising.

Read the reporting clause too. Agree what is measured before the first invoice, and make sure at least one measure connects to something commercial rather than to reach. If nobody can name the number that would make you renew, the review meetings will be a slideshow.

Getting to a decision

Write one brief, send it to everyone unchanged, and require the same structure back. Differences should appear in approach and in production volume, not in what each firm decided the job was. If you would rather write it once and receive comparable replies, you can set out the requirement and collect structured proposals against it.

Where the underlying need is being found rather than followed, the shortlist belongs with search specialists in the city. Where the brief is really about a steady supply of written material, look at content marketing firms, and where you need press coverage and reputation work, begin with local public relations teams. If the site itself is the weak link in the journey, fix that first with a website design studio nearby. For the wider category and the other markets it covers, start from the overview of social media agencies.
