Best 15+ Web Development Companies in Atlanta

Almost nobody in this market is building a first website. The typical brief is a replatform: a site assembled over years on a content system nobody wants to touch, with a redesign layered on top of it, a few hundred pages that still earn traffic, and a marketing team that cannot afford a bad launch week. That is a different web development purchase from a new build, and the proposals that win it are the ones that take the existing site seriously.

This page is a practical guide to buying web development here. The supplier profiles below give you the shortlist; the sections that follow give you the questions that separate a firm who has replatformed a working site from one who has only built new ones.

Read the web development quote for what is missing, not what is listed

Two proposals at similar totals usually differ in what sits outside the line items. Ask each supplier to state in writing whether the following are included or excluded: content entry and who does it, image preparation, form and tracking setup, third party scripts your marketing stack requires, accessibility fixes found during testing, cross browser and device testing, staging and production environments, the launch itself out of hours if that is what you need, and the defect period afterwards.

Content entry is the item that most often turns a fixed price web development contract into a series of invoices. Somebody has to move text and images into the new structure, decide what gets cut, and rewrite what no longer fits the template. If the quote assumes you will do it, say so out loud and count the hours, because marketing teams routinely underestimate that work and then delay the launch while they catch up.

Content modelling is where an Atlanta web development project is won or lost

The structure behind the pages decides how expensive the site is to run for the next several years. A content model built from reusable fields, with real relationships between locations, services, people and case studies, lets an editor publish without a developer. A model built as a pile of free text areas produces a site that looks finished and needs a ticket for every change.

This matters more than usual for businesses with many locations, franchises or service areas, which describes a large share of the companies buying here. Ask how a new location is added, how long it takes, and whether the page it produces is genuinely different from the others or a template with a name swapped in. Ask to see the editing interface of a site the supplier built, populated with real content, and ask a colleague who is not technical to try adding a page while you watch.

Migration, redirects and the traffic you already have

The fastest way to lose money on a replatform is to lose the rankings you spent years earning. Before design starts, someone needs to produce an inventory of every existing page with its traffic, and a mapping from each old address to a new one. Pages that disappear without a redirect become errors; pages that all redirect to the home page are only slightly better.

Put this in the contract as a named deliverable with an owner. Agree who supplies the analytics and search data, who writes the mapping, who implements it, and who checks it after launch. Ask what the supplier does about page structure, internal links, metadata and structured data during the move, and whether any of that is billed separately. A supplier who has done this will offer the redirect map before you ask; one who has not will describe it as a technical detail. If organic traffic is a major channel for you, it is worth aligning the build with your search specialists before the structure is frozen rather than after.

What happens in the weeks after launch

Most web development disputes after launch are really disagreements about a word. Define a defect as a difference from the agreed specification, not as anything you dislike on the day. Then agree how long the supplier fixes defects at no cost, how quickly they respond to something that breaks checkout or forms, and what the escalation path is at midnight. Distinguish this from change requests, which are new work and should be priced.

Separately, decide who keeps the site alive. Content systems, plugins and libraries need updating, certificates expire, and a site nobody maintains becomes an incident eventually. Either buy a maintenance arrangement with a stated scope and response time, or assign it internally to a named person. The worst outcome is the common one, where everybody assumes the other party is watching.

Turning three proposals into a decision

Brief a small number of firms, not a long list, and give each the same document, the same access to your analytics, and the same deadline. Insist on meeting the developer who would do the work rather than only the account lead. Ask how much of the delivery is subcontracted and to whom. Ask for a reference from a client whose site they replatformed and then supported for at least a year, because support reveals more about a supplier than a launch does.

Where the brand direction and page design are still open, that is a separate engagement and it is reasonable to compare web design agencies for it in parallel. When your requirements are written down, send the brief and collect matched proposals from firms that fit it. You can also work through the full directory of web development companies, and if the site is mainly a lead engine, look at what local digital marketing agencies would do with it once it ships.

Questions to ask before hiring a web development company in Atlanta

Is a large firm safer than a small one for this kind of project?

Size buys continuity, not quality. A small studio with two developers is a risk if one of them leaves mid project, which is why source control in your own account and written documentation matter more than headcount. Ask who covers the work when the lead developer is unavailable.

Should we keep our current content system or move?

Move when the system blocks the way you want to publish or when nobody will support the version you are on. Staying is usually cheaper and often correct. Ask any supplier who recommends a move to say what it buys you in editing time and running cost, in plain terms.

How long should a website development project take?

Longer than the proposal says if your content is not ready. Development time is rarely the constraint on a replatform; approvals and content are. Ask for a schedule that names your obligations with dates, so a slip has a visible cause.

Can the same firm handle the site and an application?

Sometimes, but the skills diverge quickly. A marketing site and a customer portal are different products with different testing needs, and a firm that is strong at one may staff the other from whoever is free. Ask for the team behind the specific piece of work you care about.
