Best 15+ Web Development Companies in Montreal

Two different buyers use a listing like this one. The first is a local organisation that has to publish in French and English and wants a supplier who treats that as ordinary rather than exotic. The second is a company elsewhere in Canada or across the border that wants a nearshore team in a compatible time zone. The web development questions they should ask overlap less than you would expect, so this guide separates them.

The verified supplier profiles are below. What follows is the part that decides whether the engagement goes smoothly once the contract is signed.

French and English change the architecture of Montreal web development

Language obligations in the province are a design constraint, not a translation task. The French version has to be at least as complete and as prominent as the English one, which affects navigation, the default language a visitor sees, the wording of calls to action, form labels, error messages, email notifications, documents offered for download and anything generated by a third party widget you embed.

Technically, decide early how the two versions relate. Separate address structures per language, correct language attributes in the markup, alternate links between equivalent pages, and a rule for what happens when a page exists in one language only. Ask the supplier to show a bilingual site they built and to demonstrate publishing a page that has no counterpart yet. Ask what the search engine sees. A web development team that has only ever shipped in one language will describe this as a plugin, and it is not.

Translation belongs in the content model that web development delivers

The expensive version of bilingual publishing is the one where an editor copies text into a document, emails it to a translator, receives it back, and pastes it into a second page that slowly drifts out of sync with the first. Ask how the content system handles this instead: linked language versions, a visible translation status, the ability to publish one side while the other is in review, and a record of which version changed last.

Ask about the interface details too. French text is typically longer than the English equivalent, so buttons, navigation labels and card layouts have to tolerate that without breaking. Numbers, dates and currency need to format per language. Typography needs the accented characters in every weight the design uses. None of this is difficult, but all of it is invisible until launch week if nobody asked.

Hiring a web development team here from somewhere else

If you are commissioning from outside the province, the practical advantages are a working day that overlaps with most of the continent and a deep pool of developers. The things that cause friction are administrative rather than technical, so settle them in writing at the start.

Agree the contract currency and who bears exchange and banking costs. Agree the governing law and where a dispute would be heard. Agree who is an employee of the supplier and who is a contractor, and confirm that intellectual property assignment covers both, because a chain that stops at a subcontractor is not an assignment. Confirm where data is stored and processed if your project involves personal information, since privacy obligations here have their own requirements around consent, retention and breach notification. Ask how status is reported and on what day, and insist on written summaries rather than only calls.

Make the code easy to leave

The single best protection in any website development engagement is the ability to walk away cheaply. Ask for the repository to live in an account your organisation owns, with the supplier invited to it. Ask for the deployment process to be documented well enough that another firm could follow it, and for the environment configuration to be recorded somewhere other than one developer's laptop.

Ask for a handover package as a priced deliverable: architecture notes, the content model, the integration list with credentials held by you, a list of third party services and who pays for each, and a short recording that shows an editor how to publish. Suppliers who intend to keep your business by being good will agree to all of this without hesitation.

Comparing proposals from firms that describe themselves the same way

Almost every firm in this market claims full service delivery in both languages. Separate them with specifics: ask which named developer does the work, how bilingual quality assurance is performed and by whom, what is excluded from the price, and what a change request costs once the project has started. Ask for one reference in each language.

When your requirements are written down, outline the project and collect comparable proposals from suppliers that match it, or browse the directory of web development companies and build your own shortlist. If the brief is really an internal system, look at custom software firms instead; if a native app is involved, compare app developers; and if the visual direction is still open, web design agencies cover that half of the work.

Questions to ask before hiring a web development company in Montreal

Which language should the site default to?

French, unless you have a specific reason and have taken advice about your obligations. Detecting the browser language and remembering the visitor's choice is the usual approach, but the version served by default matters legally and should not be decided by a developer preference.

Can web development launch in one language and add the other later?

Technically yes, and it is a common plan. Build the language structure from the beginning even if only one side is populated, because retrofitting it into templates, addresses and navigation afterwards costs more than doing it once.

Do we need translators who understand the industry?

For anything technical, regulated or commercial, yes. Machine translation reviewed by a bilingual colleague is acceptable for low stakes content and visibly wrong for anything else. Decide which pages are which, and budget accordingly.

How should we handle a site that already exists in one language?

Audit what is worth translating before translating anything. Most sites carry pages that earn nothing, and paying to duplicate them is the most avoidable cost in a bilingual project.
