Best 15+ SEO Agencies in Exeter

In Exeter the SEO brief is regional before it is local

The city is the commercial centre for a very large, very rural hinterland. Businesses based here rarely sell only to the people inside the ring road. They sell across Devon, often into Cornwall, and frequently to visitors planning a trip from somewhere else entirely. That makes the geography of the brief the first decision, not an afterthought.

It also explains why so many SEO targets in this market look local but behave regionally. Somebody typing the city name may be forty minutes away and simply using the nearest place they know how to spell. If your site answers only for the city, you are handing that enquiry to whoever built for the county. If your site claims the whole county without any real presence in it, you produce pages nobody believes and the map results ignore.

So before you read a single proposal, write down the places where you genuinely have people, vehicles, jobs completed or a real reason to be credible. That list is the spine of everything an SEO agency will build for you.

Location pages fail when they are the same page with a different name

The default answer from a weak SEO supplier is a template with a variable in it. Twenty towns, twenty near-identical pages, each one thin, each one competing with the others for the same handful of phrases. It is cheap to produce and it is the most common reason a small business sees no movement after a year of paying.

Push for the opposite approach. Ask how many location pages they would actually build, what would be different on each, and what evidence would justify creating another one. Good answers include jobs completed in that area, photographs from real sites, named team members who cover it, local delivery or travel terms, and genuine differences in what customers there ask for. Good answers also include a refusal: there are places you should not build a page for, and an agency willing to say so is protecting your budget.

The same logic applies to service pages. A single page covering everything you do will lose to competitors who gave each service the room to answer a real question.

Checking longevity and references in a market where everyone knows everyone

This is a small professional community. Agencies here have long histories, staff move between them, and the same names recur across a decade of client work. That is an advantage for you, because reputations are real and checkable, but only if you actually check.

Ask each shortlisted firm for two clients in your sector and speak to them. The question that produces useful information is not whether they were happy. It is what went wrong and how it was handled, because every engagement of any length has a bad quarter and the handling is the thing you are buying. Ask also how long the proposed account lead has been at the agency, and who would take over if they left.

One local caution: if the agency already works with a direct competitor in your catchment, that is not automatically disqualifying, but it should be disclosed and discussed. In a market this size the overlap is common and the awkward conversation is better had before signature than after.

What a technical audit should actually tell you

Almost everyone offers an SEO audit and most audits are a crawl export with a cover page. A useful one is short, prioritised and specific to your platform. It should name the templates that generate your pages, identify where your content management system creates duplicate or parameter-laden URLs, say which fixes need developer time and roughly how much, and be explicit about what it is choosing not to fix and why.

Ask for one before you commit to a term. Give each shortlisted team read-only access to your analytics and search console for a week and ask for a page of findings. The exercise costs them a few hours, it costs you nothing, and the difference between the replies is usually larger than the difference between the fees.

If a website rebuild or a platform move is anywhere on your plans, raise it now. Migrations remove more organic revenue than any update to the ranking systems, and the agency that will be asked to explain the drop should be involved in the decisions that cause it.

Content a rural catchment will actually search for

SEO content plans in this category default to industry explainers that no customer has ever typed. In a regional market the more productive material is narrower and more practical: what a job costs to do in an older property, how long a lead time runs in the season, which parts of the county you can reach on the same day, what the rules are for a listed building or a protected landscape, what the alternative is when the obvious solution will not fit.

Ask a prospective partner to propose three titles based on your enquiry inbox rather than on a keyword tool. The quality of that small exercise tells you whether you are buying thinking or volume.

Terms, notice and the assets you should hold

Quotes will arrive as fixed-price projects, monthly retainers or advisory days, and all three can work. What separates a comfortable engagement from an uncomfortable one is the exit. Confirm the notice period, whether the term rolls over automatically, and exactly what is handed back in the final month.

Ownership of the SEO estate should never be in doubt. Domain and DNS, content management system administration, analytics and search console properties and the business profile all belong under accounts your company controls, with agency users added and removed as needed. Content written for you, along with its source files and any photography commissioned for location pages, should be yours on payment. Ask for the redirect map, the change log and the record of link placements, separated into earned and paid, as named deliverables rather than favours.

Making Exeter quotes comparable

Write one brief and send it to everyone unchanged: your services, your true coverage area, your platform, the enquiries you need each month, your budget band and your start date. Ask for replies in the same order so the comparison is about substance. Ask each team what they would refuse to do, because scoping honestly is a skill and a supplier who agrees to everything will disappoint somebody eventually.

Consider whether search should sit with the same supplier as the rest. Teams in this city often combine it with digital marketing, social media or software development, which helps when the site and the content plan are changing together. To sanity check the price range you are shown, comparable quotes from SEO agencies in Bristol or Southampton are a fast benchmark, and the wider SEO agency directory lists the same category everywhere else.

When your brief is ready, send it through the offer request form once and let the shortlist reply in a format you can compare line by line.
