Best 15+ Social Media Agencies in Exeter

Does the agency need to be in Exeter at all

This is the question to answer first, because it decides the size of the market you are shopping in. Most of what a social media team does travels perfectly well down a video call: strategy, writing, scheduling, ad management, reporting. One part does not travel, and it is the part buyers forget. Somebody has to be physically present to photograph the kitchen, film the workshop, catch the event, interview the staff member who is good on camera.

So split the requirement. If your account needs a steady flow of real footage of real things, proximity has value and you should weight it. If your content is screen based, illustrated or supplied by your own team, a supplier two hundred miles away is not worse, and insisting on local will shrink your shortlist to whoever happens to be nearby. The wider directory of social media agencies is worth reading with that distinction in hand.

What a small supply pool does to the way social media is sold here

In a city this size the same handful of firms appear for every digital enquiry, and most of them are generalists. That has one clear advantage: a generalist who has served local businesses for years understands your customers better than a specialist who has never been here. It has one clear risk: social media is frequently the newest and thinnest part of a generalist offer, staffed by whoever was hired most recently.

Ask a direct question. How many accounts does the person who would run mine currently run, and what else do they do in a week? A marketing executive covering search, email, the website and four social accounts is not being lazy, but they are not going to produce anything distinctive either. Price accordingly, and do not expect a boutique result from a bundled line item.

Bundled with everything else, or bought on its own

Bundling genuinely works when your needs are modest and consistent: a steady social media presence, occasional promotion, someone who answers messages. One supplier, one invoice, one relationship. The trap is that bundled hours are fungible, and when the website needs attention the social media hours are what gets borrowed.

Buying separately makes sense when the channel is a real acquisition route rather than a hygiene requirement, or when you need a level of craft the local generalist market does not hold. If you go that way, decide who owns the overlap: someone has to make sure the campaign, the landing page and the email say the same thing in the same week.

The shape of the year in this part of the country

Demand here does not sit flat. Visitor driven businesses front load the year into a short intense season and go quiet afterwards. The student population arrives and leaves on a fixed rhythm that reshapes local footfall twice a year. Professional services and the health and education employers run on a calendar of their own that ignores both.

A supplier who has worked here will build that into the plan: heavier production before the season rather than during it, budget held back for the quiet months, recruitment and employer content timed to when people are actually looking. Ask any candidate to describe your year back to you before they describe their process. It is the fastest test of whether they have worked with businesses like yours or only read about them.

What the brief needs when the team is not in your building

Remote delivery works when the raw material flows. Agree how footage and photography reach the social media team, who on your side is responsible for sending it, and what happens in a week when nobody does. The most common failure in a small budget social media retainer is not bad strategy, it is an empty content pipeline followed by filler.

Write down the approval route, the number of revision rounds, the response time for comments and messages, and who may reply without checking. Then agree a quarterly session in person or on camera where the plan is genuinely reviewed rather than reported on. Two or three good meetings a year beat twelve status calls.

Fee models, and the floor below which quality is not possible

Monthly retainers dominate here and suit continuous social media work. Small retainers are common and workable, provided everyone is honest about what a small number of hours buys: a modest publishing rhythm and basic community management, not strategy, not original video, not paid campaign management as well.

Project fees suit a launch, a rebrand or a seasonal campaign, and are often the better first purchase because they test the relationship without a long commitment. Hourly arrangements suit topping up an internal person who does the daily work and needs occasional expertise.

Whatever the model, ask what is excluded. Ad spend, boosted post budgets, stock licences, printed collateral and paid tools sit outside the fee more often than buyers expect, and discovering that in month two sours an otherwise decent relationship.

Access, ownership and the exit

Your social media page roles, business manager, ad account and pixel should belong to your organisation, with the supplier added as a partner. Small agencies frequently set these up inside their own accounts because it is quicker, and it is quicker, right up until the relationship ends.

Ask for raw photography and video files rather than exported crops, and get the music and stock licence terms in writing. Agree a notice period, a handover pack and a rate for transition help while everyone is still pleased with each other.

Comparing what comes back

Send the same short brief to everyone and require the same structure in reply: hours by discipline, content volume by format, community response commitment, paid management if any, reporting. Ask each supplier what they would not do, and ask each one what they would need from you every month for the plan to work.

If the website is the real bottleneck, deal with the technical build before spending more on distribution. If search traffic matters as much as the channels, keep search work as its own line rather than letting it disappear into a bundle. When the brief is ready, ask several suppliers to quote against it together so you are comparing like with like.
