Best 15+ SEO Agencies in Northampton

Two kinds of company buy SEO in this town, and their problems barely overlap. One is the distribution and light industrial sector that fills the sheds along the motorway corridor. The other is the large population of owner managed businesses, from trades and professional practices to independent retail, working with budgets measured in hundreds rather than thousands a month. Almost every weak engagement here comes from selling the second group a version of what the first group needs.

What a Northampton SEO budget actually buys

Be blunt with yourself about the arithmetic. A modest monthly fee buys a small number of hours from somebody's calendar, and those hours are the entire product. Spread across an audit, a report, a blog post, some link outreach and a meeting, they achieve nothing in any of those areas. Concentrated on one substantial job a month, they can move a small business a long way in a year.

So the question to ask every candidate is not what is included. It is how many hours, on what, and who does them. Then ask them to describe the first three months of SEO as three single projects rather than as a list of ongoing activities. Suppliers who cannot answer are selling a subscription to reporting, which is the most common shape of wasted SEO spend at this end of the market.

Warehousing, haulage and the buyer who searches by capability

For the logistics and light manufacturing side, the searcher is an operations or procurement manager looking for a specific capability with a specific geography attached: temperature controlled storage, bonded space, contract packing, pallet networks, same day distribution, a site within reach of a particular junction. Volumes for those phrases are small and the value of a single contract is large, which inverts the usual advice about traffic.

The SEO that pays here is unglamorous. Real capability pages instead of a single services page. Honest descriptions of capacity, accreditations, shift patterns and the geography you can actually reach. Case detail that a procurement reader will believe. Ask a prospective agency to show you how they would structure that, and watch whether they talk about your operation or about content frequency.

Freelancers, small studios and agencies from out of town

The local SEO market is mostly individuals and small studios, many of whom also build websites, plus regional agencies that cover the area from a nearby city and national firms that will happily take the account remotely. Being local is worth less than people assume, with one genuine exception: a supplier who can visit your site, photograph the operation and interview your staff will produce content that a remote team cannot.

What matters more than location is whether the person you meet is the person who works on the account. In small firms that is usually true, which is an advantage. In larger ones ask directly, and ask what happens when that person is on holiday or leaves.

Checking a shortlist without losing a month to it

People in this market routinely search for ranked lists of local SEO agencies before choosing. Treat those lists carefully, because placement on many of them is bought rather than earned. A shortlist is better built from two or three concrete checks.

Ask each firm for two clients in a comparable size bracket and call them, with one specific question: what did the agency do in the last three months. Ask to see a live view of a client's search performance data during the call rather than a slide. And look at whether the agency's own claims are testable, because a firm that describes its results in terms of enquiries and contracts is thinking the way you do, while one that describes them in impressions is not. If your site itself is the weak point, the honest answer may be to spend the first budget with a web design team before spending anything on search at all.

Fees, notice and the commitment that is fair

At this end of the market the sensible arrangements are simple. A fixed price piece of work with a defined outcome, which you can compare between suppliers and which ends. A small monthly retainer with a stated number of hours and an agreed focus for each month. Or advisory time by the hour if you have somebody in house who can implement.

Long minimum terms are harder to justify for a small business, though some commitment is reasonable because search work takes months to show. A fair compromise is a short initial project, then a rolling monthly arrangement with a month or two of notice. Be wary of anything sold as a package of links for a fixed fee, and of contracts that renew automatically unless cancelled in a narrow window.

Accounts, ownership and the handover

This is the part small businesses get wrong most often, usually because the same person built the website, registered the domain and set up the listings. Make sure the domain registration, the hosting, the business profile, the analytics property and the search console property are all in your company's name, with the supplier added as a user. If any of them currently are not, fixing that is the first job, before any SEO work begins.

Agree that content and any technical specifications transfer to you on payment, and that leaving involves a written handover rather than a scramble. It rarely becomes contentious, but when it does it is expensive.

Judging the work when the numbers are small

With low volumes, monthly SEO traffic figures bounce around for no reason and tell you very little. Better measures are the count of genuine enquiries, the proportion of them that were relevant, the positions of a short named list of commercial phrases tracked from a local point, and whether the pages you paid for are being crawled and indexed at all.

Give the work two quarters and write down in advance what would count as failure, so the review is a comparison rather than an argument. When you are ready to compare suppliers, look at the wider field of organic search specialists, see how the same category is served nationally through the agencies covering the whole country, and send one brief to a small shortlist so the replies arrive in a format you can lay side by side.
