Best 15+ Web Design Agencies in Northampton

In a smaller supplier market the web design choice is rarely between four comparable studios. It is between a template based package from a local firm that also does print, a two person studio doing genuinely custom work, and a larger practice in a bigger city that will take the job but not prioritise it. Those three options are not competing on the same thing, and pretending they are is what produces a quote comparison nobody can read.

Template or bespoke, the decision that sets everything else

A template based web design starts from an existing theme and adapts it: colours, fonts, imagery, page structure within the limits of what the theme supports. It is faster, cheaper, and entirely legitimate for an organisation whose site needs to be clear and current rather than distinctive. The honest version of this offer says so plainly and shows you the starting point.

A bespoke build starts from your content and your audience and draws something specific. It costs more because someone is doing more, and it is worth it when the site has to carry a positioning, when the content does not fit anybody's standard page types, or when the brand is the product. The version to avoid is the one that charges bespoke prices for template work, which is common enough to be worth one direct question: what are we starting from, and may I see it.

A small web design market rewards diligence

With fewer suppliers, reputation carries a lot of weight and references are easy to check because everyone knows everyone. Use that. Ask for two clients whose projects are a year or more old rather than the most recent launch, and ask them the questions that matter after the excitement has faded: was the site still being looked after, how quickly were problems answered, could their own team make changes without calling.

Ask also whether the studio has worked with anyone in your sector and, if so, whether that creates a conflict. In a compact market this comes up more often than people expect, and it is far better raised at the start than discovered when a competitor launches something familiar.

Design bought alongside print and signage in Northampton

Many buyers here already have a supplier doing leaflets, vehicle livery, exhibition graphics or packaging, and extending that relationship to the website feels efficient. Sometimes it is. The brand stays coherent across every surface, one relationship covers everything, and nobody has to explain the business twice.

The risk is specific and worth naming. Print and web design behave differently: a layout drawn on a fixed page does not stretch, a colour that prints beautifully can fail a contrast requirement on screen, and a typeface licensed for print may not be licensed for web use at all. Ask directly who does the screen work, whether it is in house or passed to a partner, and ask to see live sites rather than flat visuals. A studio that is strong in print and honest about the boundary is a perfectly good partner; one that presents a website as a page layout is not.

Key person risk and how to ask about it

Small web design studios concentrate capability in very few heads. That is why the work is personal and good, and it is also the exposure you are accepting. One illness, one holiday, one larger client arriving in parallel, and your dates move.

Ask what else is in the diary during your window, who covers if the lead designer is unavailable, and what would happen to the project if the studio stopped trading mid build. The last question sounds blunt and has a practical answer: staged payments tied to accepted work, files delivered at the end of each stage rather than only at launch, and hosting and domain registrations held in your own accounts rather than the supplier's. Those three arrangements turn a potential disaster into an inconvenience.

What you should receive when the web design work is finished

Write the handover into the contract rather than assuming it. Editable source files and any custom artwork. The component library or, at minimum, documentation of the typographic scale, spacing and colour rules so the next person can extend the site without guessing. Font licences in your name. Administrative access to every account created for you, including the content system, the domain registrar and any analytics.

Add a short recorded walkthrough for whoever will update the site. It is the cheapest item in any proposal, the first to be cut, and the difference between a site your team maintains and a site that quietly stops being updated after three months.

Running a comparison that means something

Because the three kinds of supplier price differently, a simple total tells you very little. Send each the same brief and require the same items back: what you are starting from, a list of templates rather than pages, who writes the copy, how many review rounds are included and at what stage, what happens after launch and at what cost, and what arrives at handover.

Then read the support line carefully. A monthly fee that bundles hosting, small changes and a content system licence can be good value or can be the mechanism that makes leaving difficult, depending entirely on what happens if you cancel. If assembling those answers yourself is more administration than you want, you can describe the project once and receive structured proposals from several suppliers at the same time.

Two adjacent purchases are worth separating. If the requirement is really a system with logic, accounts and integrations behind it, the shortlist sits with software firms building custom systems rather than with a design studio. If the identity itself is unresolved, settle that first with studios handling identity and visual systems, because commissioning web design on top of an unfinished brand is how projects acquire a fourth revision round.
