Best 15+ Web Design Agencies in Bath

Template or bespoke: the web design fork every buyer in Bath meets

Almost every quote you receive will sit on one side of a line that nobody says out loud. Either a studio starts from a commercial theme and shapes it around your brand, or it draws your pages from nothing. Both are legitimate. They are simply not the same product, and comparing their prices as though they were is how buyers end up disappointed by the cheaper option and resentful of the dearer one.

A themed approach suits a business whose offer is conventional and whose competitive edge lives elsewhere: an accountancy practice, a letting agent, a clinic. Drawn work earns its cost when the brand carries real weight, when the product needs explaining visually, or when your audience will see you beside far larger names. A heritage business with a long trading history and a customer base that arrives partly through tourism usually falls into the second group, because the visual signals of longevity are hard to fake from a template.

Ask every candidate directly which route they are proposing and why. A studio unwilling to name the route is protecting margin.

Count the revision rounds before you sign anything

Revisions are where web design budgets quietly die. A proposal that says design work will continue until you are happy is not generous, it is unpriced, and one of you will end up paying for that vagueness in money or in resentment.

A workable arrangement names a number of rounds per stage and defines what a round is: one consolidated set of comments, delivered once, within an agreed window. It also names what a round is not. Changing the brief is not a revision. Adding a page type that was never scoped is not a revision. Reversing a decision you already approved sits somewhere in between, and the proposal should say who absorbs that.

Ask what happens when the rounds run out. The honest answer is an hourly or daily rate, quoted up front, which lets you decide whether the next change is worth buying.

More concepts is not better value

Buyers often ask for extra initial concepts, believing more choice means more value. In practice it dilutes the work. A studio splitting the same fee across several directions gives each of them less thought, and the presentation turns into a beauty contest between things that were never argued for.

Two or three routes, each with a written rationale explaining what it assumes about your customer, produce a better conversation than half a dozen decorated homepages. Judge the reasoning first and the picture second, and resist merging your favourite elements from different routes. Coherence is most of what you are paying a web design studio for.

Content comes before layout, not after it

The single most common cause of delay on projects of this size is a design that is finished and waiting on words that nobody has written. Your studio will fill the gaps with placeholder text, the layout will be approved against that placeholder, and then the real content will arrive at twice the length and break the composition.

Decide early who writes the copy and when it is due, and treat that date as seriously as any design milestone. If nobody internally has the time, price copywriting into the project rather than pretending it will happen at weekends. Web design drawn around real sentences and real photographs is a different piece of work from anything composed around grey rectangles.

Put the approval list in the contract

Name the person whose approval ends a stage. In a small business that is usually the owner, and the trouble begins when a partner, a board member or a long serving manager sees the work late and reopens a settled question. Nobody is at fault, but the project pays for it.

If more than one person must see the work, say so, list them, and give them a slot. Then agree that comments arrive consolidated from one address. Studios rarely ask for this because it feels like telling a client how to run their company, but every experienced web design lead wishes you would offer it.

Questions worth asking at the first meeting

• Which route are you proposing, themed or drawn, and what would change your mind?
• How many revision rounds are included, and what counts as one?
• Who is doing the drawing, and will I meet them?
• What do you need from us, on what date, for the timeline to hold?
• What do we own at the end, and does that include the working files?

The fourth question is the most revealing. A studio that answers it precisely has run projects that went wrong before and has learned where the delay actually comes from.

Shortlisting web design agencies in Bath without guessing

Keep the list short. Three candidates, one identical brief, the same requested response structure, and a deadline. Reading five proposals properly is beyond most owner managed businesses, and a rushed comparison rewards the prettiest document rather than the best thinking.

Look at live work rather than portfolio images, and look at it on a phone. Ask who has maintained each of those sites since launch, because a web design that nobody could extend without returning to its author was only half delivered. Then check that the person who charmed you in the meeting is the person who will hold the pen.

Our directory lists verified web design agencies with profiles you can read before making contact, alongside nearby disciplines such as SEO agencies, social media agencies and public relations agencies serving the same businesses. When your three are chosen, ask for matched proposals so every studio answers the same brief. Where a project also needs custom build work, the listed software companies are a separate conversation.
