Web Development Companies in Beijing and the ICP Filing

Building for Beijing Means Building Without the Usual Dependencies

A site that loads instantly everywhere else can stall on a blank screen for a domestic visitor, and the reason is rarely the code you wrote. Hosted font services, map widgets, tag containers, embedded video players, captcha providers and the public libraries most front-end projects pull from a shared content delivery network are either blocked or slow enough on a domestic connection to behave as if they were. Because those requests usually sit in the render path, the browser waits for a response that never arrives and the visitor leaves before anything paints.

The first technical conversation with a web development company in Beijing should therefore be a dependency audit rather than a portfolio review. A team that ships for this market keeps a standing list of packages it refuses to load remotely: fonts are self-hosted, libraries are bundled rather than fetched, the map component is swapped for Amap or Baidu Maps, the analytics layer is replaced, and any captcha or social widget that calls out to a foreign endpoint is removed at the design stage. Ask for that list in writing before you agree on a stack.

Testing habits separate the experienced from the merely capable. A proxy tunnel makes everything look fine, which is exactly why it is the wrong test environment. Suppliers who work on domestic launches test from an ordinary local connection on an ordinary local handset, and they will tell you so without being prompted. If a candidate has only built export projects, expect to pay for a rebuild of the entire asset pipeline after the first round of user complaints.

The Filing That Gates Your Launch Date in Beijing

Serving a website to domestic users from domestic infrastructure requires an ICP filing. The filing binds three things together: one domain name, one hosting provider and one licensed local entity. A foreign company generally cannot hold it alone, which means either a local subsidiary, a partner entity or an arrangement through the hosting provider, and each of those options has different consequences on the day you want to change suppliers. Certain content categories also need a separate public security registration, and the record has to be displayed in the site footer with a link to the registry.

What derails schedules is treating this as paperwork that runs in parallel with development. It does not. The filing has to be granted before the site can answer a request, it takes weeks rather than days, and moving the site to a different hosting provider afterwards means going through it again. Put the application on the project plan as a dependency with its own owner and its own date, and ask in the first meeting whose entity will appear on the record and what happens to that record if the relationship ends.

Traffic Arrives Inside an App, Not a Browser Tab

Most visits begin in a messaging app rather than on a search results page, so the in-app webview is the primary rendering target and the desktop browser is the secondary one. That has concrete build consequences. Share cards need their title, description and thumbnail registered through the platform's JavaScript SDK against a verified official account, and a domain that has not been added to the trusted list will silently fail to sign requests. Back-button behaviour, scroll restoration and file upload all behave differently inside the webview than in a standalone browser.

The related decision is whether you need a mini-program alongside the responsive site. A mini-program gives you a place in the app ecosystem and a smoother payment flow, but it is a separate codebase with its own review process and its own release cadence, and maintaining both doubles your testing surface. Suppliers who have shipped both will tell you which parts of your product justify the second build. If the answer is your entire catalogue, ask them to defend it. Teams comparing this against a native route often look at mobile app development companies in parallel.

Payments Begin With Merchant Accounts

Integrating the dominant wallets is not difficult engineering, but the accounts behind them take time and paperwork. Wallet payment flows expect a merchant account bound to the same verified official account that serves your pages, onboarding requires a local business licence and a domestic settlement account, and card payments route through the domestic scheme rather than the international ones your existing integration library assumes. Customers will also expect an electronic invoice, which means an issuance step wired into your order flow rather than a manual process in finance.

Ask a candidate to walk you through a refund and a settlement reconciliation they have handled in production. The way they answer tells you whether they integrated a payment provider once or have operated one through a busy sales period.

Character Sets, Images and a Realistic Performance Budget

Typography carries a weight penalty here that Latin-script projects never encounter. A full Chinese web font is enormous, so a competent team either uses the system stack, subsets aggressively against the actual copy on the page, or splits the font into ranges loaded on demand. Getting this wrong is one of the most common causes of a slow first paint on an otherwise well-built site.

The rest of the budget is ordinary discipline applied strictly: modern image formats with sensible dimensions, no render-blocking third-party scripts, and caching served from a domestic edge network whose licence is tied to the same filing as your domain. Hosting offshore and pointing the domain abroad is technically possible and skips the filing, but the border crossing adds latency and variability that show up worst on mobile networks. Decide deliberately, and measure from a domestic connection rather than from your own office. Search visibility depends on the same groundwork, which is why teams often bring in search specialists working in Beijing before the architecture is frozen.

Handover in Beijing Is About Accounts, Not Repositories

Source code is the easy part of a transition. The difficult part is the collection of accounts a live site depends on: the domain registrar login, the cloud console, the filing record, the verified official account, the merchant account and the analytics property. If those were opened under your supplier's entity because it was faster, you do not control your own site, and the filing in particular cannot simply be handed over like a password.

Write the ownership of each account into the contract, along with the steps required on termination and a defined period of cooperation afterwards. Insist on a documented environment, a build that runs from a clean checkout, and staged acceptance testing on the same device mix your visitors actually use. If your team cannot deploy without the supplier, the project is not finished regardless of what the invoice says.

How to Compare Web Development Companies in Beijing

Shortlist on evidence rather than on capability lists. Ask for a live site the team built for the domestic market, open it on a local connection, and look at what it loads. Ask which filings they arranged and under whose name. Ask how they handle the release of a mini-program and a website in the same sprint. A team that answers these in specifics has done the work; a team that answers in adjectives has not.

Separate the disciplines when you scope the brief. Interface and visual work is a different craft from engineering, and many buyers hire design partners alongside the build team. Larger back-office systems and integrations may point you towards software companies based in Beijing instead. If you are selling online, the storefront layer has its own specialists among ecommerce agencies.

You can review verified profiles, portfolios and client feedback for web development companies on Edvido, then request proposals from the shortlist you build. Give every candidate the same brief, including your dependency constraints and your filing situation, so that the quotes you receive are genuinely comparable.
